Due to her size, the interior refit on 'Spirit' is a dockside project. She is a Chris White designed Atlantic 55 performance cruising catamaran. Although the owners don't intend on racing her, they do log a lot of miles. Keeping performance in mind is important as fractions of knots in boatspeed really add up after a week at sea. To this end, when panels have been replaced, we substitute the existing marine plywood for high tech composite sheets. Weight savings are a constant concern. The main driving force behind the refit is to make the cabinet and storage space throughout the boat more functional. When you live on a boat, you need all of the space you can get. The starboard hull has seen the bulk of the work to date and the galley in particular was the most intensive section. Plumbing, electrical and heating systems were all modified in this process.
The picture at right illustrates the original galley layout. Major concerns were the height and depth of drawers and the sizing of cabinet doors. The owners also wished to get more space out of the entire package by increasing each bank of cabinets by 2". Due to the extensive system re-working required and the overall wishes to save weight, the galley was totally removed to the hull walls.
The demolition process is about halfway complete in this next picture. The hull had to be ground smooth and the narrower cabinets on the inboard section still had to come out.

Because the boat still needed to be used from time to time, it was important to complete this project around the owners schedule and ensure 'Spirit' is still available for day sailing or race committee work.
The re-building process followed. The cabinet construction relies on epoxy joints and adhesives - no mechanical fasteners were used. The following pictures show the transformation back to a galley and from all reports from the owners, the increased functionality and space is exactly what they asked for.
